Lyrics

Written by Matt Duke/Matt Duke Music Publishing (BMI)

Walk the road past the fence, dear brother
Swing the rope back and forth across this creek
Pound the nail, rapping hard on the casket,
Where innocence is doomed to be

Down the township line past the turnpike
Spark a blaze ‐ lost myself in an oxy haze
I’m abetting a man inside I’ll be regretting
If I wake up

Tripping on the roots on this town
Someone must be weeding us out
The rain pours down and I’m watching it fall
God save us all; rest our souls.

Hope so high float away past the treetops
Leaving kids with potential to waste
I’m losing faith with the chemo, the car crash,
The weary armed with razorblades

Neighbors and loved ones are starting to break
With homes coming down under all of this weight
And all we can do is just stand here and play each hand we’re dealt
Forget the pain we felt and we’ll bury the dead

We’ve all heard the old song about the hip bone being connected to the leg bone, but what about the heart-strings and the grey matter? That connection is harder to make – but it’s one that Matt Duke manages to forge with the whip-smart, emotive songs on his second Ryko album, One Day Die – an album which touches on the darkness implicit in that title and uses it as a springboard to redemption and rebirth.

The Acoustic Kingdom Underground EP features six tracks that were largely inspired by Matt's literary experiences. Although he dropped out of college after "15 minutes," he has used many great novels as a jumping-off point for many of his finest tunes.

Kingdom Underground is a thoroughly engaging collection of ten intelligent, literate folk-based pop songs that exude a unique playfulness while tackling some often weighty topics. Whether with tenderness, torment, or turbulence, Matt Duke renders each of the songs on Kingdom Underground as if its emotional content is as fresh and new as the moment he first experienced it.
